Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Valley Falls, Kansas. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, offering facilities in all Nationwide locations capable of administering these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for most tests. The hair analysis can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

The trend in drug testing methods has increasingly favored the hair follicle approach in recent times. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests rather than the traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are invaluable for organizations with strict no drug-use policies, as well as for court mandates and probation checks. This test's key advantage is its extended detection time of up to 90 days, with a monitored sample collection process, ensuring minimal chances of tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has become a potent means of identifying the use of substances such as drugs and alcohol. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair reveals an extended timeline of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to an estimated three-month period. Hair collection proves to be straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. In terms of head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair pertains to all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This involves verifying that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive screening requires validation for legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Upon a sample being presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and curated for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, along with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, lending credibility to the results.
  • Historical substance use data: It enables depicting a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent substance use: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur more expenses compared to alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Valley Falls, KS, hair follicle testing outperforms urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
