Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Volland, Kansas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in this field and provide nationwide centers to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent times, the demand for drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making it nearly impossible to cheat. For drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to three months. This process is easy to perform, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample comprises a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands, approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil, yielding 100mg of hair for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, collecting the same amount of body hair is acceptable. The term "head hair" here specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning stage, samples are initially integrated into the laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inserting any supplementary information missing from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes a preliminary drug abuse inspection. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptively positive results in Screening necessitate extra verification.

If Screening indicates possible drug presence, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing a more challenging procedure.

Confirmation of positive screens is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter timelines.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It can outline a retrospective pattern of drug usage over a duration, not solely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent usage: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days after intake.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
