Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assays in Waldo, Kansas. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in such evaluations, with facilities available across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient for testing. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over the past years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug screens instead of traditional urine assays. Such tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, the legal system, and probation authorities. The main advantage is the extended detection window up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it incredibly hard to falsify. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use, trapping indicators within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it offers a detection span of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional testing, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's framework. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes essential data input absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for drugs. It is cost-effective for negating drug use in most samples; however, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that show presumptive positivity will need a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluids. As such, hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation for any positive findings in Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair testing for drugs:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a much shorter window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: Offers insights into drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more than other methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this method examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
