Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Walnut, Kansas. If hair drug or alcohol testing is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with centers available across all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can be tailored to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for evaluating drug use. Many employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists now favor hair tests over conventional urine tests. This method is preferred by organizations with strict drug policies, legal entities, and probationary programs. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy and difficulty in tampering. For recent usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of long-term alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Measuring the specimen weight on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for generating a drug test outcome consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes its initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This procedure includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair in lower concentrations than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is highly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Data over time: Offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal growth variations can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually scrutinize the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
