For those in need of thorough hair follicle drug testing in Wamego, Kansas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to service. Specializing in hair testing, we offer services nationwide, including testing centers across various cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as offer tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common choice for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor these over urine tests. They are crucial for workplaces adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and monitored individuals. A key advantage is their extended detection span of up to 90 days, under close observation, nearly eliminating cheating. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional testing, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and ensuring any additional data entry requirements beyond those provided electronically via a chain of custody system are fulfilled.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use on most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In cases where Screening suspects a positive result, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any tentative positive result from screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and according to ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection windows.
  • Challenge to avoid detection: Tampering with hair drug tests is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides an overview of use: It presents a trend of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics such as color or growth rate can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair samples.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
