Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Washington, Kansas. Whether it’s a hair drug or alcohol screening, our focus on precision in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities located across all major cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient for analysis. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/EtG, or other specific hair testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are shifting from traditional urine methods to hair drug tests. Hair follicle screening appeals particularly to employers with strict no-drug policies, the court systems, and probationary monitoring. Its chief advantage is a longer, up to 90-day window for drug use detection, carried out in a supervised process, which is challenging to tamper with. For precise drug use screening within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the standard option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer nearly a three-month period of detection for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and over 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing when a sample enters a laboratory's system. This stage involves ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any additional data logging not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial cursory evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening effectively rules out drug use in most samples cost-wise, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, the hair yields drugs at a much lesser concentration than other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a highly complex method to execute.

Positive results from Screening are substantiated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers past usage information: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over traditional urine tests in Washington, KS. While standard urine testing is more immediate, hair testing uncovers drug usage with enhanced accuracy and reliability, making it a superior method. Employers benefit significantly from its ability to maintain high standards in workplace safety and compliance.

Urine tests can sometimes provide a limited view of substance use, whereas hair follicle examinations reveal a consistent and broader detection window, reducing risks and ensuring thorough insights into past behaviors.

Extended Detection Window

One standout feature of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, especially in Washington, KS. This test can identify substance use stretching back up to 90 days. Such a comprehensive timeline offers employers a thorough view of an applicant or employee's history, informing better hiring and retention decisions.

Distant past drug consumption often remains undetectable with standard methods, but hair testing thoroughly captures a long-term record, greatly enhancing workplace safety and policies effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Washington, KS, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant approach to drug testing. This method significantly minimizes the possibility of adulteration or tampering, providing trustworthy and unquestionable outcomes that lead to informed vigilance.

The integrity of the hair sample remains intact from the time of collection until analysis, establishing confidence in the results. This assurance of reliability is unmatched by other testing methods, instilling peace of mind in test users.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
