Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Weskan, Kansas. Need a hair or alcohol test? As hair testing specialists, we offer services across the Nation with centers in every city capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers various tailored testing choices.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug detection. This test is increasingly required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, court officials, and probation officers use hair drug tests for their long detection periods—up to 90 days—collected under supervision, making it highly reliable and difficult to manipulate. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective approach for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. It records a historical pattern of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of each growing hair strand. When the hair is cut close to the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use within a timeframe of up to around three months. Hair samples are easy to collect, resistant to manipulation, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 strands (approximately akin to a #2 pencil's width), taken near the scalp, yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is preferable. Utilize a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If hair from the scalp is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair applies exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result revolves around four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial processing phase, where a sample enters the laboratory’s system. This process confirms that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and incorporates any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for illicit drugs. Although it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most cases, any positive results must undergo confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples delivering presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, emphasizing the complexity of hair drug testing processes.

Confirmation of every positive preliminary finding is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. All samples with presumptive positive findings are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory cycle, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: The results from a hair drug test are difficult to falsify, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It presents a timeline of substance use over months, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Detection delay: Drugs may take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair coloration and personal hair growth differences may alter the levels of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
