Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in White City, Kansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is backed by Nationwide centers located in all cities, capable of conducting these tests. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. This method is versatile, offering analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

More frequently in recent years, drug testing methods have shifted towards the hair follicle drug test. Hair drug tests are increasingly demanded by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals, supplanting traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary programs favor hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, spanning up to 90 days. This test is conducted in observed conditions, reducing the likelihood of tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within a five-day period, urine tests remain unrivaled in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust means for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a detailed timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When a sample is taken near the scalp, it allows for detection of drugs and alcohol for up to about 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample features a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil), yielding around 100mg of hair, perfect for screening and confirming results. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. In absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be substituted. When we refer to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair includes every other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory drug test processing comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s database. It involves checking that the sample was sealed and sent properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Despite Screening being a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples yielding presumptive positive results in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, the drug extraction from hair occurs at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodologically.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical patterns: Offers insight into a pattern of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
