Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Williamsburg, Kansas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are accessible across cities nationwide, ready to conduct tests. For a test, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is usually needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair testing over standard urine analysis. Hair tests are ideal for workplaces with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation scenarios. They extend the detection period for drug use up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting it is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (akin in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's best to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, and more).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four chief phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial phase of processing a sample in the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample was sealed and shipped appropriately, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and concludes any other data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for illicit drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to negate drug use across most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be considered court-admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn from hair at markedly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g. urine or oral fluid), hence the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It’s extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It provides a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Williamsburg, KS, hair follicle testing demonstrates significant advantages over traditional urine testing. One primary benefit is the extended detection time, allowing identification of substance use up to 90 days after ingestion compared to the shorter window offered by urine tests.

Moreover, hair tests present a lower likelihood of cheating due to monitored sample collection, ensuring authenticity and reliability. This makes them a superior choice for workplaces aiming to enforce strict drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Williamsburg, KS, favor hair follicle testing due to its capacity to identify drug usage over extended periods, up to 90 days. This thorough approach provides not just a snapshot but a detailed history of an individual's substance use.

Such an extensive detection window empowers businesses to make well-informed hiring or disciplinary decisions, reducing potential risks associated with workplace drug abuse.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Williamsburg, KS, appreciates hair follicle tests for their tamper-resistant nature. The method reduces the risk of sample manipulation, ensuring the integrity of each test result.

Unlike other testing methods, the hair sample's collection process is monitored and more challenging to adulterate, providing peace of mind for employers and legal institutions seeking reliable data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
