Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Williamstown, Kansas. For anyone requiring hair-based drug or alcohol analyses, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this method, offering nationwide centers in all cities to administer these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally needed. Such tests can be customized to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

There has been an increasing trend towards using hair follicle drug tests over the traditional methods in recent years. A widespread choice among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, hair tests replace conventional urine tests due to their longer detection period—up to 90 days—making them suitable for workplaces with a zero-tolerance policy and probation cases. Although nearly foolproof, urine tests are still the go-to for detecting drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp region, hair can offer an insight into usage spanning up to roughly a 3-month period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which represents the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be procured. References to head hair exclusively denote scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all alternative hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the analysis of a drug test outcome within a lab setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This consists of confirming the sample’s proper sealing and delivery, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any residual data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result from screening requires confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Any samples yielding presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing process before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can discern drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination inspects the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers substantial advantages over traditional urine methods in Williamstown, KS. With superior detection accuracy, these tests are considered more reliable than their urine counterparts.

Employers looking for a detailed understanding of substance use history prefer hair testing. The extended detection window surpasses urine test limits, making hair tests the preferred choice for comprehensive assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Williamstown, KS, benefit from hair follicle tests detecting drug usage over 90 days. This extended window provides a complete look into an individual's substance use history, offering detailed insights.

Compared to traditional methods, the 90-day detection period of hair testing gives employers confidence in assessing ongoing substance habits, aiding in informed decision-making for hiring or retaining purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
