Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Adams, Kentucky. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized services nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is typically required. Our hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included the hair follicle drug test. This test is preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently utilize hair follicle tests. Its main advantage is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, within a controlled environment, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for determining drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can offer an approximately 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample consisting of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically relates to scalp hair alone. Body hair includes other types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, expedited examination for drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive Screening outcome requires further confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair, which occurs at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive Screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection range: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It illustrates a usage pattern over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be discernable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
