Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ages, Kentucky. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with facilities available Nationwide that perform these tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body will suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or accommodate other specialized hair testing needs.

More often, drug testing has transitioned towards including hair follicle tests in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary programs. The main benefit is an extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. The urine test, however, remains the benchmark for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It offers an extended history of various substances by encasing biomarkers in the strands' fibers as hair grows. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can reveal substance use within roughly a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

A 1.5-inch strand sample including approximately 200 strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. When performing EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's beneficial to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. In mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's initial processing into the lab system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns it a unique random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves additional data input beyond what is provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While it's a cost-efficient means to identify drug use across most samples, any positive findings must be further validated for court validity. Samples identified as potentially positive in Screening require additional verification.

In cases where Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the sample for further preparation during Extraction. Drugs are extracted from the hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluids, which is why hair screening presents a higher challenge.

Positive findings from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing potential positive results are cleaned before this step as necessary. The whole process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, making the results more reliable.
  • Historical insight: They offer a timeline of drug usage over a sustained period, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", it's the hair strand itself that is analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Prevails in Ages, KY: Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing demonstrates superior accuracy and reliability. The absorption of drug traces into hair provides a more consistent and longer detection period, making it a preferred choice for organizations with stringent policies.

Urine tests, while effective for recent use, lack the comprehensive insight provided by hair tests, which detect use over a longer timeline, ensuring thorough evaluation processes.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window: Hair follicle testing in Ages, KY, offers a remarkable detection period of up to 90 days. This duration allows employers to gain a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history, crucial for informed decision-making.

Comprehensive Review: Utilizing this extended window, companies can ensure their workforce aligns with drug-free policies, employing individuals who meet the required standards long-term.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Method: A significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Ages, KY, is its reduced risk of sample adulteration. The nature of hair tests deters attempts to alter results, providing trustworthy outcomes consistently.

Samples collected through this method ensure that results remain untainted and reliable, offering organizations certainty and confidence in drug testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
