Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Avon, Kentucky. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise is in hair testing, and we have facilities throughout the nation that can administer a hair test. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is required. Tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for this instead of the standard urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and those on probation commonly use it. The key advantage is an extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, with strict observation ensuring minimal cheating. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. The hair keeps a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, it can allow for a detection span of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is preferred. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are exclusively discussing scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all additional hair categories (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Outline

The pivotal stages in lab-processing a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the foundational processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This entails ensuring the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-friendly method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. For all presumptive positive samples, washing occurs before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Challenge in evasion: Cheating on a hair drug evaluation is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It showcases a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not solely recent usage.

Restrictions:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is examined, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Avon, KY, hair follicle testing is preferred over urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which may only showcase recent drug use, hair testing offers an extensive overview, capturing a longer timeline of drug consumption.

The reliability of hair testing stems from its ability to detect a wider range of substances over an extended duration, presenting a comprehensive picture unmatched by traditional urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

An extended detection window of up to 90 days is a significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Avon, KY. This extended timeframe allows employers to have a more thorough understanding of an employee's or applicant's substance use history.

Such a long detection period means employers in Avon, KY, gain a strategic benefit by having insights that extend well beyond what is captured in typical urine testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Avon, KY, hair follicle testing is recognized for its tamper-resistant qualities. The integrity of hair samples is less susceptible to adulteration, ensuring the results are both reliable and uncontaminated.

These tests significantly reduce sample manipulation risks, giving peace of mind with results that are nearly impossible to falsify.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
