Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug screening services in Baskett, Kentucky. If a hair or alcohol test is essential, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. You need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for most tests. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Over recent years, the practice of drug testing has increasingly adopted hair follicle examinations. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. These tests' primary advantage is their extensive detection period, up to 90 days, gathered in supervised settings and nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a history of biomarkers related to alcohol and drugs over a period by incorporating them into the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent in width to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed within the laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Screening provides a cost-efficient means of excluding drug use in the majority of samples; however, a positive screen must be validated to be legally enforceable. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening need further confirmation.

If the Screening stage suggests a positive result, additional hair from the original sample is used for the Extraction phase. During this phase, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is significantly lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples yielding presumptive positive results are subject to washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments that have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's extremely challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a view of drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Price: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites detectable in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
