Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services conveniently available in Belmont, Kentucky. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair follicle analysis sets us apart.

We have testing facilities across all major areas to provide the required services.

Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, sourced from the head's crown or the body when needed. Hair tests are versatile and may assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing requirements.

Recently, there has been a trend towards hair follicle drug tests in place of traditional methods. Increasingly, employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning towards hair analysis as an alternative to conventional urine tests.

Companies with strict anti-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary services now frequently require such precise testing.

A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection capability, typically covering up to a 90-day window, conducted with an observed collection method, and nearly immune to manipulation.

Despite this, urine tests retain accuracy in detecting recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a formidable method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibrous strands as it grows. When extracted near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, with around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG tests, additional tests, and instances exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to assess the specimen's weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis procedure of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transmitted, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means of dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. All samples presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are subjected to a wash before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur greater costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Belmont, KY: Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine analyses through its enhanced detection accuracy. Offering a longer detection window, it captures up to three months of drug history, ensuring comprehensive analysis.
Moreover, the collected samples are nearly invulnerable to tampering. This robustness makes hair testing the go-to choice for employers and legal bodies seeking precise results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
