In Shepherdsville, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests. Specializing in hair testing, our centers are nationwide, ready for drug or alcohol tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as needed.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a preferred drug screening method. Employers, courts, and professionals favor it over urine tests due to its longer detection period of up to 90 days. Hair tests are nearly foolproof, unlike urine tests which are preferred for checking recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Considered a potent approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a prolonged look into substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal a drug and alcohol use timeline of up to around three months. Not only is hair collection straightforward, but it's also slightly resistant to tampering and convenient for shipment.

A sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands, equating to a 1.5-inch segment close to the scalp and roughly the width of a #2 pencil, provides around 100mg of hair ideal for testing. For EtG, additional panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to gauge the sample weight. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair imply scalp hair, while body hair includes various types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes entails four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the early treatment of a sample within a lab's framework. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording any extra data absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid primary assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Presumptively positive samples from Screening need further confirmation.

Once a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at drastically lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any presumptively positive screen result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation whenever necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, every part of the lab process is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a timeline of substance use, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Shepherdsville, KY, holds several advantages over traditional urine tests. Offering a twice-as-long detection period, hair tests ensure no recent consumption gets overlooked. Their superior detection capability makes them a reliable choice for employers committed to maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Unlike urine tests, which might reflect only recent exposure, hair testing extends the detection timeline significantly, ensuring that patterns of use over months are not missed.

Extended Detection Window

In Shepherdsville, KY, hair follicle tests provide an extended detection window reaching up to 90 days. This enhances employers' ability to assess an individual's substance use history comprehensively. A broader detection span means employers can rely on richer data when evaluating potential hires or conducting routine checks.

With this thorough detection ability, employers gain insightful data into past substance use, supporting more informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Shepherdsville, KY, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant method reducing risks of sample adulteration significantly. As hair samples are difficult to manipulate, they stand as a robust testing option providing trustworthy results that withstand scrutiny.

This reliability elevates hair testing above others, safeguarding against falsified results, and ensuring that the process is safe from manipulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
