Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing services in Blairs Mills, KY. With nationwide testing locations, our expertise in hair analysis ensures reliable results. Generally, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is sufficient for testing. We provide testing options for a wide range of substances.

Hair follicle drug tests are increasingly favored by employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse specialists for their zero-tolerance policies. Compared to urine tests, hair testing offers a detection period of up to 90 days, decreasing the likelihood of cheating with its observed, secure collection process. For recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to modify, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and evaluations beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening helps economically exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result in this phase must be validated to be legally acceptable. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and poised for Extraction. In this step, substances are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral specimen), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results found during screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Attempting to deceive a hair drug test is quite difficult, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Captures longitudinal data: It offers a view of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the process actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Blairs Mills, KY, outshines traditional urine tests with its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis detects a wider range of substances over a prolonged period, offering enhanced accuracy and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
