Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Brooklyn, Kentucky. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we have specialized expertise in hair assessments and our testing centers are available across all cities Nationwide to perform such tests. Typically needing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body in most scenarios, hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. More and more employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation leverage hair tests. Major advantages include a broader detection window of up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and difficulty to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol presence. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg—the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process comprises four significant stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missed data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening cost-effectively eliminates use in most cases, a positive result must be confirmed for courtroom validity. Presumptive positive samples in Screening need a secondary verification.

Should a sample be presumptive positive at Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before Confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to a review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can trace drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It charts a timeline of drug consumption over time, as opposed to just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: It requires 5-7 days before drugs appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these actually inspect the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
