Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Carr Fork, Kentucky. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our national network features testing centers in every city that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair are required. Analyzing hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options is available.

Recently, the hair follicle method has increasingly been used in drug testing. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer it over the traditional urine test. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, the judiciary, and probation officers because of their longer detection window, up to 90 days, as well as observed collection, preventing cheating. Urine tests remain more accurate for drugs used in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of growing hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a comprehensive account of alcohol and drug usage over time. When taken from near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use within a period of around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both preliminary and confirmatory tests. For EtG or additional tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The process of achieving a drug test result in the lab involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, samples are initially processed into a laboratory system, ensuring they are appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data not provided by an electronic custody chain.

Screening performs an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although screening efficiently excludes drug use from most samples, a favorable screen needs confirmation for legal acceptance. All samples presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive in Screening, further hair from the original portion is used for Extraction, where drugs are taken from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), showing why hair drug testing can be the most complex.

Confirmation of positive screening results is completed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The whole process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to three months, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Highly tamper-resistant: Tampering with a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insights: This method reflects a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited to detecting past use: Drugs become evident in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often more costly than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the frequent term "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
