Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Casey Creek, Kentucky. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers located in cities across the Nation ready to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or from the body is required, and hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly embraced hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those under probation. Their primary advantage is a substantially longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected through a monitored process, making them nearly foolproof. However, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to around three months for substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp region will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both initial and follow-up testing. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary input of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and dispatch, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry that might not be incorporated by an electronic chain of custody

Screening includes a preliminary rapid test for drugs. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug presence for most samples, a screen showing positive results must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are separated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underlining why hair drug assessment is among the most challenging procedures to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that feature a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insights: It offers an account of drug consumption patterns over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Possible result fluctuations: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
