In Claryville, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, our nationwide centers conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other custom testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity for drug screening. Many employers and courts prefer hair testing over urine tests. It's favored by those with zero-tolerance policies due to its extended 90-day detection window and challenging to circumvent. For detecting recent drug use within five days, however, urine testing remains the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within its growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substance use. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, test add-ons, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, whereas "body hair" refers to any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The chief stages in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry if an electronic chain of custody system hasn't provided it.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to mostly rule out drug use, a confirmed positive result is necessary for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples from the Screening phase undergo further preparation in Extraction, where additional hair is sourced from the initial sample. Drugs are extracted at a much reduced concentration from hair than from other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed for confirming any positive screening outcome. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is particularly tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a record of drug use over time, not just immediate use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot capture recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Variable outcomes: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests in Claryville, KY due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span, hair testing provides a more comprehensive look at an individual's substance use. This extended detection window gives employers a clearer view of past drug use.

Choosing hair follicle tests over urine tests in Claryville, KY enhances testing reliability and accuracy. Hair tests are less prone to manipulation and give a more detailed historical account of drug use. Consequently, they prove more effective in ensuring a drug-free environment, offering organizations greater peace of mind.

Extended Detection Window

In Claryville, KY, hair follicle testing reveals drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This long detection window helps employers and officials get a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance history, going beyond what traditional urine tests can offer. This in-depth insight is invaluable for maintaining drug-free environments.

Employers in Claryville, KY benefit from the 90-day detection window of hair follicle testing. This extended period allows for a thorough review of a candidate's or employee's drug history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
