Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clay, Kentucky. Whether you're seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide, including every city, ready for service. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head is typically needed, although body hair can sometimes suffice. We provide tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly favored over recent years as a method to test for drug use. It's becoming a requirement for standard assessments by many workplaces, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts. Those enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services prefer these tests. The significant advantage is a detection window that extends up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, offering little chance for tampering. Urine tests, however, remain most effective for identifying drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair analysis can present an evaluation window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drug presence. Hair is straightforward to obtain, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches composed of about 200 strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG and additional tests beyond 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The primary phases in processing a drug testing sample in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial procedure of integrating a specimen into the lab’s system. This includes confirming the proper sealing and mailing of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial brief examination for substance abuse. While Screening is economical for dismissing drug usage in the majority of samples, to be valid in legal contexts, a positive screen must undergo confirmation. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a sample as presumptively positive, more hair is prepared from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration distinctly lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), illustrating why hair drug analysis is one of the more challenging processes to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation receives scrutiny under CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines for Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in altering hair drug tests enhances the reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over time, unlike tests focusing solely on recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: An estimated 5-7 days is needed before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug testing generally incurs more costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair shaft and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
