In Clifty, KY, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests. If you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our centers, available nationwide, specialize in hair testing. Typically, hair from the crown of your head or body hair of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed. Options include drug tests, alcohol/ETG, and more customized choices.

Recently, drug testing frequently includes hair follicle tests. They are often required by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, instead of standard urine tests. These tests are ideal for those with zero-tolerance policies and for probation cases. The key advantage is a 90-day drug detection window, nearly impossible to cheat. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline for substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair shaft. When taken from the area near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect hair, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches from around 200 strands of hair (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process includes verifying the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use for a majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. At this step, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire procedural flow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays historical usage: It offers a timeline of drug use over a stretch of time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become apparent in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variance: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
