Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Coopersville, Kentucky. For individuals requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise includes hair analysis with facilities across the nation equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Our hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized testing options.

The trend in drug testing methods has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle analysis. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by drug-free workplaces, courts, and probation programs. Its advantages include detecting drug use over extended periods of up to 90 days, with an observed collection method, making it nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substances by embedding biomarkers in its growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for substances. It's easy to collect, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal sample size for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four central stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, which integrates a sample into the lab system. It involves confirming the sample’s sealed and shipped condition, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation for legal acceptability. Thus, samples that show presumptive positive results need further confirmation.

In instances of a presumptive positive result from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the intricacy of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is supervised under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect for a shorter period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: Displays a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth factors can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
