Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Crescent Springs, Kentucky. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we're experts in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods, used increasingly by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of standard urine tests. They cater to zero-tolerance drug policies in workplaces, court systems, and probation. The hair follicle test's primary advantage is its extended drug use detection period, up to 90 days, collected through an observed process that is tough to deceive. Yet, urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol use. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair offers a prolonged record of substance activity. When gathered near the scalp, hair can show substance and alcohol exposure for up to an approximate 3-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively secure against tampering, and easy for transit.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation stages. For EtG, extra tests, or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight is recommended. If scalp hair is scarce, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s operations. This step involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry required that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

The Screening phase, an initial rapid check for substances of abuse, is a cost-efficient method to exclude substance use for most samples. However, to be court-admissible, a positive screen must undergo confirmation. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need a follow-up Confirmation.

Where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any Screening positive occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests may reveal substance use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are extremely hard to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Detailed usage history: They can indicate patterns of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments actually evaluate the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair and urine drug testing in Crescent Springs, KY, hair tests offer superior detection. They surpass the capabilities of traditional urine methods by providing insight into longer drug usage periods, ensuring higher reliability and accuracy. This method excels in uncovering substance use that urine tests might miss.

Employers benefit from hair testing due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent use, hair tests reveal a comprehensive history of drug use. This robust detection capability provides companies with reliable data, ensuring that their drug-free workplace policies are upheld efficiently.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method allows Crescent Springs, KY employers to get insights into a much longer period of drug use, stretching up to 90 days. This extended window provides a fuller picture of an individual's substance usage history than traditional testing methods. This helps in making informed decisions during hiring or ongoing employment.

Hair follicle testing's long detection period offers employers a high level of scrutiny. Unlike tests that scrutinize recent use, hair follicle testing unveils a long-span history of substance use, which can be pivotal in maintaining workplace safety and ensuring employees abide by substance policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Crescent Springs, KY, hair follicle testing is designed to be highly tamper-resistant. By using hair samples instead of fluids, this testing method drastically reduces the possibility of adulteration, ensuring that the results are both reliable and difficult to falsify.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
