Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Crittenden, Kentucky. Whether you require a hair drug test or an alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing, and we have testing facilities available in cities all over the country to conduct this type of test. Generally, a minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is needed for effective testing. Our hair tests can be tailored to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more standard method for conducting drug assessments. These tests are increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to the typical urine analysis. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation scenarios often favor hair follicle drug tests due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection procedure, and high resistance to tampering. However, for detecting substance use within the immediate past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a drug and alcohol detection period of approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A collection of 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For testing like EtG, additional add-ons, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not an option, a corresponding amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair when mentioned, whereas body hair encompasses other types such as facial or axillary.

Procedure Summary

Drug testing in laboratories consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial intake into a laboratory's system, including ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample registers as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair from the original collection is readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, versus the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably harder to deceive, increasing result precision.
  • Aggregated historical information: It provides a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs aren't detectable in hair until approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests”, the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Crittenden, KY, hair follicle drug tests have distinct advantages over traditional urine testing. A primary benefit of hair testing is superior detection accuracy, which can identify substance use over a longer span of time. This reliability makes it a preferred option for employers enforcing strict drug-free workplace policies. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests are less vulnerable to submission of adulterated samples, thus increasing confidence in the results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days in Crittenden, KY. This prolonged timeframe provides a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, making it a valuable tool for employers looking to assess long-term patterns of behavior. By utilizing this method, employers can achieve a thorough view of potential and current employees' past drug use, leading to more informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-resistant by design, hair follicle drug testing in Crittenden, KY decreases the potential for sample manipulation, ensuring dependable results. The method's reduced risk of adulteration compared to urine testing provides confidence in the integrity of the process and the results. Institutional users can rely on hair testing to deliver conclusive evidence of drug use without the concern of sample tampering, resulting in trustworthy outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
