Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Cropper, Kentucky. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are specialists in hair analysis and operate testing locations nationwide that can administer such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the scalp or body. Our hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for additional screenings.

Recently, conducting drug assessments has increasingly integrated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction professionals are choosing hair testing over traditional urine samples. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under supervision favor hair tests. The principal advantage is the extensive drug detection timeframe, capturing up to 90 days, collected through direct supervision, and nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, a urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a historical record for alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an estimated 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug presence. It's straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly a #2 pencil's thickness) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair specifically, whereas "body hair" refers to other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab’s system initially. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not accomplished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a quick preliminary test for drugs of abuse. While it's cost-efficient for negating drug presence in many samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive at this stage must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. This involves extracting drugs from the hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods like urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike the shorter window of urine tests.
  • High accuracy and hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is challenging, thus results are more reliable.
  • Long-term use patterns: These tests reveal usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection: Drugs appear in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests often cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cropper, KY lies in its superiority in accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide a vastly longer detection window, unveiling drug use patterns missed by urine tests. This unparalleled insight enables employers to uphold drug-free policies effectively, ensuring detection of hidden substance issues, fostering a safer and more secure workplace environment.

Contrasting hair tests with urine tests reveals greater detection potential, offering employers a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use over three months. By surpassing the limited capabilities of urine tests, hair analyses deliver superior outcomes, empowering companies to confidently implement their strict substance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Cropper, KY is a prominent feature of hair follicle testing. It provides the capability to trace substance use over a prolonged period of up to 90 days. This extended timeframe surpasses that of traditional tests, yielding an insightful review of an individual’s substance usage history, thereby assisting in maintaining a drug-free work environment.

The 90-day detection span of hair tests offers a comprehensive analysis of past substance use, which is invaluable for employers screening potential hires. This extended monitoring window allows for a detailed assessment of lifestyle choices, enhancing decision-making in hiring and workforce management, promoting long-term workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
