Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination in Custer, Kentucky. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, our specialization is in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. Hair on the crown of the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is typically sufficient. Hair analysis can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Over recent times, utilizing hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors now choose it over conventional urine testing. Hair follicle examinations support zero-tolerance drug policies for employers, judicial conditions, and probation cases. Benefits of these tests include an extended detection range of up to 90 days, supervision during collection, and a high level of tamper resistance. However, for the most recent five-day drug use, urine tests remain the definitive option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal consumption of alcohol and drugs for up to 90 days. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equal portion of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures to derive a drug test result encompass four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase consists of introducing a sample into the laboratory system initially. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly means to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, results need to be confirmed to be legally admissible. All samples appearing positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In the case of presumptive positives in the Screening phase, extra hair from the original specimen is extracted for use in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentration levels than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening poses such a challenge.

Confirmation for any positive findings in screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over an extended period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine testing in Custer, KY, hair testing is favored for its superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can only detect recent substance use, hair tests reveal a broader history of drug consumption. This makes hair testing a formidable option for enforcing zero-tolerance policies, offering a more detailed detection scope.

Extended Detection Window

In Custer, KY, hair follicle tests possess a remarkable detection window of up to 90 days. This extended period provides employers and authorities a vast overview of an individual's drug usage history. With such widespread coverage, hair analysis becomes a trusted method to scrutinize substance habits, offering a detailed record beyond what typical testing methods offer.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Custer, KY is unparalleled, especially due to its resistance to tampering. Unlike other methods, these tests mitigate the risk of sample alteration, ensuring that the results are genuine. This minimizes doubts and ensures confidence in the findings, making it nearly impossible for individuals to manipulate the outcome of the analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
