Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Dan, Kentucky. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide that can conduct these analyses. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, making hair assessments ideal for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Over recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle evaluations. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now demand hair tests rather than standard urine assessments. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation rely on hair tests. Key advantages include a more extended detection window up to 90 days, an observed sample collection, and minimization of cheating. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-standing record of alcohol and other drugs by securing biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for alcohol and other drugs spanning roughly up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch fragment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advocated. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. In the context of head hair, the reference is solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial formation into the laboratory's system. This step entails verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a rapid preliminary drug abuse check. Though Screening is an economical method to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to withstand court scrutiny. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Cheating difficulty: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It provides a drug use pattern over time, rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
