Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Doe Valley, Kentucky. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization in hair testing, along with Nationwide testing facilities, guarantees service in every city, including hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

There has been an increasing shift towards hair follicle drug tests in recent years for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases. The key advantage lies in their extended detection duration of up to 90 days, being collected under supervision and being nearly impervious to tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for last 5 days screening.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Gathering hair samples is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirming tests. For EtG, additions, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We advocate for using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. While discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing step whereby a sample is introduced into a laboratory's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid test for detecting drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method for negating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptance. All samples with presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is notably complex to administer.

Confirmation involves verifying any positive screening outcome using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is ISO / IEC 17025 accredited.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period of detection.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, thereby yielding more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: They reveal drug use trends over extended periods, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Individual differences like hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", these assays evaluate the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
