Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dover, Kentucky. For those requiring a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing with facilities available in every city across the Nation to conduct such tests. A minimum length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is usually required from the head or body. These tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other specific testing needs.

Recently, there has been a notable shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for substance screening. Employers, courts, and those involved in Substance Abuse treatment are increasingly opting for hair tests instead of the traditional urine tests. This preference is due to benefits like a longer drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days, observed sample collection that is nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still offer the most precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by ensnaring biomarkers within its strands. Hair samples taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of drug test outcomes follows four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for signs of drug misuse. Though a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires further confirmation to hold up in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

A presumptive positive in the Screening phase prompts additional hair extraction from the primary specimen for further processing. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to other substances (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive screen result occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical patterns: These tests reveal drug usage patterns over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
