In Eddyville, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you need screening for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across numerous cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the scalp, although body hair can be an alternative. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

The shift towards hair follicle drug tests in recent years is notable. Increasingly, employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These are aimed at individuals bound by zero-tolerance policies, court orders, or under probation. Hair tests offer an extended detection window for up to 90 days, gathered through a direct observation method that is tough to evade. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a valuable means for discerning drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches that includes approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in court. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample returns presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and held to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical consumption data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are frequently more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
