Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Elk Creek, Kentucky. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is widespread, with facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair tests are versatile, allowing analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair testing over standard urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers, courts, and probationers adhering to zero-tolerance drug use policies. Key advantages include a detection window of up to 90 days and the difficulty of tampering with results, although urine tests remain best for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary drug check. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, any positive screen must be substantiated to be viable in legal contexts. Samples yielding presumptive positive results in Screening proceed to a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in much lesser quantities than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug usage pattern over time, instead of just indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detecting drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
