Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ewing, Kentucky. If you require a hair or alcohol screen, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide, equipped to conduct hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for drug screenings. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair testing is an extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, involving a supervised sample collection that is virtually foolproof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain paramount for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers during growth. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, comprised of roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil), near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test follows four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's initial entry into a lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for illegal drugs. Although cost-effective for excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screenings is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering hair drug test results is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Shows drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other assessment techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ewing, KY

Hair follicle testing offers superior detection capabilities compared to urine tests. With a longer detection period, up to 90 days, it grants employers a detailed insight into an individual’s substance use habits beyond immediate consumption.

The precision of hair tests means that attempts at circumvention are virtually eliminated. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are not subject to the same adulteration or substitution tactics, ensuring peace of mind in results.

Ewing, KY, stands to benefit from the overall reliability and accuracy that hair testing provides over conventional urinalysis. Employers can trust in the results, reducing the potential risks associated with hiring and workplace safety.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a significant advantage in Ewing. Employers can access a comprehensive report on an applicant’s or employee's substance use history, offering insights that stretch back up to 90 days.

This extensive window provides an encompassing view that urine or other tests may miss. Ewing, KY, businesses rely on this thorough method to maintain workplace safety and policy compliance, as it provides an accurate historical look at substance use.

Longer detection spans bolster the effectiveness of drug-free workplace policies and ensure a safer environment. This makes hair testing a robust option for employers seeking thoroughness and precision.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-resistant hair testing methods in Ewing, KY, significantly diminish the risk of sample manipulation. The reliability of these tests ensures that the results are beyond question in integrity and accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
