Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Fallsburg, Kentucky. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing stands out, with facilities available in every city across the nation equipped to execute hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is required. Drug analysis, along with alcohol/ETG or other specialized options, is possible.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly preferred for conducting drug assessments. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair tests over the conventional urine analyses. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation. Their key advantage is a longer drug detection period—up to 90 days—paired with an observed collection process, and minimal chance of manipulation. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection window for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a specimen into the lab's system. This step includes checking that the specimen was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary review for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive screens require confirmation to stand up in legal proceedings. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positives during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most complex methods to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening findings is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are often costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
