Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Firebrick, Kentucky. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in hair analysis, with centers available in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity in recent years as a drug testing method. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for it over traditional urine tests. It's favored by businesses enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation requirements. A primary advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection that hinders tampering, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both analysis and verification. For EtG, addons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternative hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process encompasses confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial, swift assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening mandate further verification.

In cases of presumptive positive results at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen in preparation for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a highly challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result takes place via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo cleansing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests recognize drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection period.
  • Tough to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption across a timeline, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing modes.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigment and distinct hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Firebrick, KY, offer superior advantages over traditional urine tests. They provide enhanced accuracy, offering a detailed record of drug use over months, compared to weeks for urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
