Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle analyses in Fletcher, Kentucky. Our expertise lies in hair and alcohol testing, with facilities in every city nationwide ready to conduct assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific analysis needs.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has surged as employers, judicial systems, and addiction counselors prefer them over urine tests. Institutions with stringent no-drug policies, the judiciary, and parole agencies utilize hair tests for their extended detection range, spanning up to 90 days. Despite its broad coverage, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use, within a five-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a detailed record of substance use over time by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair testing can detect substances for a period of up to three months. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result within a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it is an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminarily positive samples undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory operations from Accessioning to Confirmation are assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and comply with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to three months, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Diluting a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It supplies a record of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like natural hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers remarkable benefits over traditional urine tests in Fletcher, KY. With superior detection accuracy, it captures a three-month history of drug use, unlike urine tests that track recent use only. This makes hair analysis a more reliable choice for comprehensive examination.

In comparison to urine testing, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window in Fletcher, KY. The ability to identify usage over 90 days offers a broader scope for employers and legal entities needing precise and reliable data. It's a clear choice for those prioritizing accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
