Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug tests in Fort Knox, Kentucky. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing enables us to offer services across all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair is suitable. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Lately, the practice of administering drug tests has often included a hair follicle test. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers rely on hair follicle tests. The chief advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected with observation, making it hard to manipulate. For screening recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal signs of alcohol and other drug use for a period of up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred quantity for testing purposes. For EtG, additional panels beyond 10, or specific add-ons, 150mg of the sample is ideal. We advise verifying the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. Note that "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair; "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result within a lab involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's workflow, including ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were handled correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage across most samples, positive results require confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample marked presumptively positive during Screening mandates a subsequent confirmation check.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a more complex methodology.

Confirmatory testing for any positive screening outcome employs precisely GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positives undergo washing pre-confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair testing can detect drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers insightful patterns: It supplies a drug use pattern over time instead of immediate usage details.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug testing incurs more expense than other methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is common, yet the analysis targets the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The superiority of hair follicle testing over urine testing in Fort Knox, KY, is evident. Hair tests provide more substantial detection accuracy and reliability, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This extended window surpasses traditional urine tests, making them less effective for long-term detection. Hair testing's precision offers significant benefits in chronicling an individual’s substance use history.

Compared to conventional methods, hair testing offers unmatched detection accuracy. Fort Knox employers find this method significantly more reliable. It presents an improved mechanism to maintain a drug-free work environment, identifying substance use much earlier than traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Fort Knox, KY exposes drug use history over an extended period, usually up to 90 days. This long detection window provides a comprehensive view of a participant’s substance use, much broader than short-term urine tests. Employers greatly benefit from this, gaining insight into the consistency of an individual's drug use, aiding better decision-making processes.

In contrast to other testing methods, hair analysis offers a broader historical perspective. This capability allows Fort Knox businesses an indepth look at an individual's substance habits, beyond the immediacy of the moment. Such thorough monitoring facilitates accurate assessments of drug use over several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
