Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fountain Run, Kentucky. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with testing centers available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is required. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a more common method for substance detection. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation often utilize hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with observations made during sample collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent usage within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use over time. When taken from close to the scalp, hair samples can indicate usage of substances up to around three months back. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) situated nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verifying. For EtG, extra tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is ideal. It's advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Only scalp hair is considered head hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is first entered into the lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entry not available through an electronic custody chain.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drugs. It's a cost-effective method to exclude drug presence for most cases, but a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need further validation.

For presumptively positive samples from Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirming, all presumptive positives are cleansed as needed. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests track substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Demonstrates usage patterns over time, unlike markers of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of immediate detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: They are generally costlier than other drug test methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
