Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Francisville, Kentucky. When in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, employ the expertise of Accredited Drug Testing. Our nationwide network of testing centers ensures comprehensive hair testing availability in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have leaned more toward hair follicle tests, becoming common in use. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine method. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, those in the legal system, and probationary individuals alike. Their advantage lies in identifying drug usage over a longer term—up to 90 days—via an observed process, making evasion nearly impossible. Nonetheless, when tracking recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. The hair captures long-term evidence of various substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximate 3-month history for alcohol and narcotic use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment constituting around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The four principal stages in laboratory examination of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's protocol. This step comprises verifying that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for illicit substances. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive screen requires validation for legal admissibility. All samples identified presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be marked presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to administer.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to validation as warranted. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to examination under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examinations can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection span.
  • Cheating restrictions: It is remarkably challenging to deceive a hair drug examination, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: This can offer a pattern of substance use over time, beyond merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited to recent detection: There is a 5-7 day requirement for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug examinations are generally pricier in contrast to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and differences in individual hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
