Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Fullerton, Kentucky. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair testing, we offer numerous testing centers nationwide that are equipped to perform these assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Hair analysis can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for various entities and professionals. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts often favor it over traditional urine testing. The test is ideal for zero-tolerance environments like workplaces, courts, and probationary scenarios. Its primary advantage is a detection period of drug use up to 90 days, using a secure and tamper-proof collection process. However, urine tests remain superior for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We recommend weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out substance use on most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be admissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other substance testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Fullerton, KY? The hair follicle method excels in accuracy, offering a more dependable detection process. Its ability to retain drug evidence longer makes it a superior choice for comprehensive screening. Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides enhanced reliability for diverse drug detection needs.

The competitive edge of hair follicle analyses over urine tests lies in their extended detection window and robustness against tampering. These tests prevent evasion and are invaluable for employers seeking to uphold strict drug use policies. With hair analysis, accuracy is rarely questioned.

Extended Detection Window

In Fullerton, KY, hair follicle tests offer a broad detection window, assessing drug history for up to 90 days. This method permits employers to gain an extensive view of potential substance use, ensuring informed decisions regarding applicants or current employees. Traditional urine tests, by contrast, offer only short-term insights.

The extended analysis capacity of hair follicle tests represents a marked advantage, capturing patterns of use that other methods miss. Companies benefit by acquiring a fuller picture of employee habits, driving safer and more efficient workplace management.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
