Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance tests in Garlin, Kentucky. For individuals seeking hair drug or alcohol assessments, our firm excels in hair testing, with facilities available throughout the entire nation capable of performing these evaluations. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair located on your head or body to conduct the test. Hair can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized screening choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method in drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and probation services use these tests. The key advantage of this type of test is its extensive detection window, typically spanning 90 days, with collection conducted under observation, making it almost impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair shaft, it offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair presents a detection span of up to about three months for these substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp weighs 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in a drug test lab process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples undergo preliminary processing into the laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming correct seal and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.

The Screening phase offers a preliminary indication of drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug use in most cases, positive results from Screening require confirmation for court validity. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate potential positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration level compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging approach.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical use: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
