Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug testing in Ghent, Kentucky. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with facilities spread across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. It's typically necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown; body hair can also be used. Hair testing can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method in drug screenings. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over classic urine screens. Hair follicle testing is chosen by employers enforcing stringent no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and those under probation. The main advantage of this method is its extended drug detection span, usually up to 90 days, overseen collection, and high resistance to tampering. Conversely, for drug detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers, hair strands offer a prolonged record of substance use. A collection near the scalp can show a detection period of nearly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair sampling is hassle-free to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair fibers (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the specimen. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If the candidate lacks scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair should be obtained. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Other hair types, like facial or axillary, fall into the body hair category.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is incorporated into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary review for possible drug usage. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most cases, any positive findings need confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than through methods like urine or oral fluid, which contributes to hair drug testing being the most intricate method to perform.

Positive screening results require Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any samples that presumptively test positive are cleansed before Confirmation if required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over a 90-day timeframe, unlike the briefer window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is notably hard to fake a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Supplies use patterns: It traces a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to find recent use: Drugs typically need 5-7 days to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to alternative drug tests.
  • Result discrepancies: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ghent, KY, hair testing surpasses urine tests by offering enhanced detection accuracy, proving reliable and superior in substance abuse revelation. Hair tests are less prone to manipulation, maintaining the integrity of results and decision-making for employers. The accuracy and reliability of hair testing provide peace of mind even in challenging circumstances.

While standard urine tests capture a brief snapshot of drug use, hair follicle tests provide an expansive temporal window into an individual's substance history. This capability is invaluable for organizations enforcing drug-free workplaces or for individuals serious about maintaining compliance and safety standards.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window, hair follicle drug tests in Ghent, KY, allow for a detailed analysis of an individual's drug intake history over up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
