Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Gilbertsville, Kentucky. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization lies in hair testing, and we operate numerous testing centers nationwide, including all major cities, to facilitate hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for conducting drug screening. This test is favored by various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, judicial bodies, and individuals on probation often utilize hair tests. The primary advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, making them difficult to tamper with, whereas urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the head yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the ideal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional exams, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to every other hair type (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry that an electronic chain of custody system did not provide.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal acceptability. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. At this juncture, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive specimen undergoes washing as needed prior to confirmation. The full laboratory process, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption over a period reaching up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • High resistance to deception: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historic usage data: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: A period of approximately 5-7 days is needed before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher price tag compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Clarification: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, and not on the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
