Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grassy Creek, Kentucky. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing and have nationwide testing centers easily accessible for such procedures. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body being suitable for testing, our services include drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common choice for conducting drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. This method is popular among employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Hair follicle drug testing provides a longer detection window, approximately 90 days, and is conducted in a monitored setting, making it difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has been recognized as a robust method for identifying consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to gather, comparably resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all different hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result can be broken down into four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is logged into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported properly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening must be substantiated to be permissible in a legal setting. Any samples that show an initial positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is separated from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentration levels than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage information: It can produce a usage pattern over a longer duration, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent usage: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug traces in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Within Grassy Creek, KY, the benefits of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are clear. Its detection window extends far beyond, often reaching up to 90 days, providing a more comprehensive view of drug use. This extended timeframe ensures a more thorough understanding, making it an ideal choice for employers committed to maintaining drug-free workplaces.

Urine tests, while useful for recent substance intake, cannot match the longevity of hair follicle tests. The impressive detection range not only enhances the reliability of results but also fortifies the trust employers place in their workforce management strategies. In Grassy Creek, KY, this superior testing method supports robust workplace policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
