Accredited Drug Testing provides a full range of hair follicle drug tests in Gratz, Kentucky. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair analysis, with facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Ideally, individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their scalp or elsewhere to facilitate the test. These analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Over the years, there has been a notable trend towards using hair follicle tests for drug screening. An increasing number of employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analysis is favored by employers with stringent no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probation services. It offers a significant advantage by detecting drug use over a period of up to 90 days, through monitored collection, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug consumption within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a formidable means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug presence by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. Harvested near the scalp, hair enables up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial induction into a laboratory’s system. This process includes affirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an expedited preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, versus urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to alter, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
