Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Grays Branch, Kentucky. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers nationwide are equipped for hair analysis. Usually, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, with options for tailored hair testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have seen increased use in drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is the extended detection range, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and nearly tamper-proof. Urine tests, however, remain most accurate for recent drug use, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for capturing drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, hair offers a chronological record of alcohol and drug exposure. When procured near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, tampering with the sample is relatively challenging, and the shipment process is uncomplicated.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair—the optimal sample quantity for analysis and verification. For tests such as EtG, additional analyses, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. The term "head hair" is specifically in reference to scalp hair. Alternatively, "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab procedure for yielding a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into the lab system. This process ensures the sample's secure sealing and correct shipping, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid analysis to identify drugs of abuse. While Screening acts as a cost-effective measure for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to stand up in legal situations. All samples found presumptively positive during Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

For a sample with a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. At this juncture, drugs are retrieved from hair at a notably lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus, hair drug analysis is one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Any positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As required, presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, in contrast with urine assessments, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Deceiving a hair drug assessment is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical use insight: It outlines a pattern of drug consumption over a prolonged timeframe, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to reveal recent consumption: Around 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair assessments generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair development can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Grays Branch, KY
Hair testing triumphs over urine tests due to its enhanced detection accuracy. While traditional urine tests detect recent drug use, hair follicle tests reveal a more comprehensive picture over a longer duration. This method's reliability makes it superior, ensuring accurate results resistant to typical evasion tactics faced by urine testing.

The longer detection window in hair testing captures a broader history of drug use, proving invaluable for employers and professionals. Unlike urine tests, which detect only short-term usage, hair tests cover extended periods, making them a robust screening choice. This thorough approach significantly elevates the integrity and reliability of findings.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Grays Branch, KY
Hair follicle testing extends detection far beyond traditional methods, covering up to 90 days. This allows employers to assess an individual's drug use history comprehensively, a feature not offered by standard urine tests. By examining substance use over this period, hair tests provide critical insights and a clearer perspective on a candidate's behavioral patterns.

Employers benefit from the extended timeframe hair follicle testing offers, gaining insights into substance use that would otherwise remain undetected. The up to 90-day detection span ensures that temporary abstinence won't distort the drug history, thus safeguarding the recruitment and monitoring processes effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Grays Branch, KY
The hair follicle testing process significantly minimizes the chances of sample tampering, ensuring test integrity. Unlike urine samples, which are often subject to various forms of adulteration, hair samples present a challenge to manipulation, offering a tamper-resistant alternative relevant for both legal and employment contexts.

Reliability in test results is paramount, and hair follicle testing provides this security through resistant collection procedures. The difficulty in adulterating hair samples as opposed to urine samples boosts confidence in the results obtained, delivering irrefutable findings critical for decision-makers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
