Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Greendale, Kentucky. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers established nationwide, including every city, to conduct hair tests. You'll generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly popular method for drug testing. Several employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Used by companies with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation, hair tests offer extended detection periods up to 90 days, require in-person sample collection, and are nearly immune to tampering. However, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests still provide the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug involvement by capturing biomarkers in the growing hair shaft. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair might be collected. In mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other sorts of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the laboratory for determining a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This means ensuring the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient strategy to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for it to hold up in court. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening necessitate a secondary affirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before the confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is nearly impossible to manipulate a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can offer a timeline of drug use over a stretch of time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
