Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Guthrie, Kentucky. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with centers across all cities nationwide that facilitate such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. These tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair analysis options.

In recent times, the approach to drug screening increasingly features a hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit employers enforcing zero-tolerance on drug use policies, courts, and those on probation. They primarily offer an extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and are highly resistant to tampering. Yet, for drug consumption within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record for alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample within a lab’s infrastructure. It entails confirming the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary check for drug abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient way to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. In this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisional positives are cleansed before confirmation, if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent actions.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Guthrie, KY is superior to traditional urine tests in several ways. With its ability to detect drug usage over a longer period, it marks a significant advance over urine tests that cover a shorter timeframe. Furthermore, the accuracy of hair follicle tests is enhanced due to its rigorous testing process, ensuring reliable results that surpass the limitations of traditional methods.

An additional benefit of choosing hair follicle testing is its reduced susceptibility to manipulation compared to urine tests. This makes it a preferred choice for entities demanding zero-tolerance for drug use. Its unparalleled detection period and reliability solidify its status as a more effective alternative to urine testing, securing its role in diverse testing environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
