In Halfway, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests, we offer services across the nation, equipped with centers in every city. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically needed from the scalp or elsewhere on the body. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice for screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now often prioritize these tests over traditional urine tests. Favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation systems, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days. While urine tests remain effective for recent drug use detection within 5 days, hair testing excels in reliability and being tamper-proof.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair can provide an extended historical record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hairs (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It is advised to use a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, you may collect a corresponding amount of body hair. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result typically involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step includes introducing the sample into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial, rapid test for drugs. Although a cost-efficient method for identifying drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples yielding a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo necessary washes before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests track drug use for up to 90 days, offering a broader detection window than urine tests.
  • Cheating is difficult: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historic usage information: These tests can illustrate patterns of drug use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur greater expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test is commonly called a "hair follicle test," but it actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
